The Internal Revenue Service announced today that tax season will begin Monday, January 29, 2018 and reminded taxpayers claiming the Earned income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit that refunds won’t be available before late February.

Although the IRS will not begin accepting electronic or paper tax returns prior to January 29th, TR Tax is currently accepting and preparing 2017 tax returns, to be immediately transmitted to the IRS as soon as systems open.

The IRS has set the January 29th opening date to ensure the security and readiness of key tax processing systems in advance of the opening of tax season and to assess the potential impact that the Trump / GOP Tax reform may have on 2017 tax returns.

The IRS still anticipates issuing more than nine out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days, but the earliest date taxpayers claiming Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and /Additional Child Tax Credits should expect their refunds is February 27, 2018, if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return.

The filing deadline to submit 2017 tax returns is Tuesday, April 17, 2018, rather than the traditional April 15th  date.  This year, April 15th falls on a Sunday, and this would usually move the filing deadline to the following Monday.  However Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington DC,  will be observed on that Monday which pushes the fling deadline to the next business day, Tuesday, April 17, 2018.
